How Recordwell may and may not be used · Last updated July 2026

What this means

Recordwell is an information tool that organizes lawfully available or licensed information and open public web pages into a single, plain-language report. It is not a background-screening service, and the information we provide has not been assembled or verified to the standards the FCRA requires of consumer reports.

You may NOT use Recordwell to make decisions about:

  • Employment — hiring, promotion, reassignment, or retention, including screening household workers, contractors, babysitters, or caregivers.
  • Housing — evaluating a tenant, renter, or roommate, or any residential rental decision.
  • Credit or lending — extending, reviewing, or collecting credit, loans, or financing.
  • Insurance — underwriting or eligibility for any insurance product.
  • Education — admissions, scholarships, or financial aid.
  • Professional or business licensing, or any government benefit that considers an applicant's character or history.
  • Any other purpose that would require a "permissible purpose" or FCRA compliance.
No adverse action. You may not take any "adverse action" (such as denying employment, housing, credit, or insurance) against any person based in whole or in part on a Recordwell report. If you need information for an FCRA-covered decision, obtain a compliant consumer report from a Consumer Reporting Agency and consult an attorney.

What Recordwell IS for

Personal, non-FCRA purposes — for example, learning more about someone you're meeting, reconnecting with people you know, checking your own public footprint, or general research. Every search requires you to affirm that you will not use Recordwell for an FCRA-covered purpose.

Accuracy

Available information may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate, and may confuse people who share a name. Recordwell separates stronger matches from name-only matches, but you must independently verify anything important before relying on it.

Adverse media screening — what is screened, and what it does not mean

When a report says press mentions were “screened against 10 risk categories”, these are the categories. A mention is matched by the published wording of its headline:

  • Fraud & financial crime
  • Bribery & corruption
  • Violent crime
  • Sexual offences
  • Drug offences
  • Terrorism & organised crime
  • Sanctions & watchlists
  • Regulatory & enforcement action
  • Cybercrime & data misuse
  • Criminal proceedings

A match is a potential match and nothing more. Recordwell does not read the article, does not weigh whether an allegation is true, does not establish that the person named in it is the person you searched, and does not produce a score or a risk level. Headlines carry no identifier beyond a name, so every press match is reported as a name match and never sets the report's sanctions or enforcement flag.

A screening that returns nothing means the mentions we retrieved were checked against this list and matched none of it. It does not mean no coverage exists. Sources that did not answer are named in the report and are never counted as clear.
